History of the Carton… did you know?

The history of the carton goes as far back as 1879 in a Brooklyn, New York factory, operated by Robert Gair. Robert die-ruled, cut, and scored paperboard into a single impression of a folded carton. By 1896, the National Biscuit Company was the first to use cartons to package crackers!


Downlands shortlisted in Manufacturer of the Year Awards – 2013

Downlands Packaging Ltd, designers and manufacturers of bespoke packaging, are delighted to have been shortlisted in the ‘ICT in Manufacturing’ category of the prestigious Manufacturer of the Year Awards 2013.

Downlands were nominated by the manufacturers of their management system who carried out a case study on Downlands use of their system. The case study was picked by the judging panel to put Downlands in the shortlist of only six companies nationally.

On 3rd October 2013, Maurice Lee, Managing Director of Downlands Packaging, attended a final judging day at Birmingham University where he had to put his case before a judging panel of:

Peter Thorne – MD of Cambashi Consultants
Steve Whittle – Head of Finance Systems and Data Improvement at Rolls Royce

After his presentation, Maurice had a 30 minute question and answer session with the judges.

The winner will be announced at a Gala Dinner at the ICC in Birmingham on 4th December 2014.

Downlands are proud to have won through to the final placings against some very high calibre opposition.



Plans for Downlands to go even greener

Downlands Packaging has always insisted on our environmental impact being as low as possible. We go to every effort to ensure that recycling and environmental sustainability remains a priority, whilst always striving to reduce our impact on the environment even further.

As a result of this ethos, Downlands Packaging is happy to announce our plans for installing solar panels to our factory, in an effort to reduce dependence on other sources of energy.

We hope to extend our effort to help the environment even further, whilst also trying to raise awareness of environmental impacts and concerns. Please read our Environmental Policy for more information on how Downlands Packaging helps protect the environment.
